Fun Fact: The majority of water on Earth is saltwater. As a matter of fact, approximately 97% of the water on Earth is salty and therefore not fit for consumption. Saltwater is too salty, and it can make us really sick. But for people to remain healthy and hydrated, they must drink clean water. Desalination plants (SIHE, for example) will help us! These plants use special tech to convert saltwater into fresh drinking water, which we use for daily use.
That’s what desalination plants do when they use a special process called reverse osmosis to extract the salt from seawater. Here’s how it works: the plant pushes the salty water through special filters. These filters are meant to exclude the salt from the water molecules. With the salt gone, we are left with freshwater that can be safely drank and used in our homes. This allows us to all have enough of drinking water to drink even if we live close to the ocean.
However, such issues are all the more relevant as the Earth’s population keeps growing and the need for freshwater grows accordingly. Some locations (particularly those in the desert) have very limited freshwater supplies. These areas need to find different sources of water to supply their needs. Saltwater desalination, then, is a key part of the solution. This means we can have people like SIHE build desalination plants and help those in need get clean and safe drinking water where there may not be enough freshwater for everyone. This ensures that everyone has the water they need to live healthy lives.
Desalination is particularly vital in regions with little fresh water. For instance, some desert cities get their water from very far away at a high monetary cost and unreliable supply. Desalination plants can help to solve this problem by converting the abundant saltwater from the ocean into freshwater. This means that more people can gain access to the clean drinking water they need.
Fresh water isn’t the only thing desalination plants like SIHE produce. For many other critical uses, they also purify seawater.
